BC ENERGY STEP CODE COMPLIANCE – MITIGATING COSTS THROUGH A BUILDING-ENCLOSURE-FIRST APPROACH

Our world desperately needs all of society to mitigate climate change.  Improving energy conservation in buildings is one of the most impactful areas for achieving this.  The BC Energy Step Code – relatively new to the local construction industry – is forcing real change in the technology we put into our buildings.  This novel code treats a whole building as a single entity in terms of energy consumption, applying a maximum use limit per year, based on floor area.  Previous codes were only a piece-by-piece recipe, without whole-building coordination.  This small but important difference opens design flexibility like nothing before and an opportunity to offset growing costs with new savings in other areas.  This presentation demonstrates a fix-the-weakest-links-first approach for targeting improvements to only where their cost will do the most overall good.
