ASTTBC, ASTTBC Foundation & Science World Canada 150 Partnership Update

ASTTBC, ASTTBC Foundation and Science World BC have launched the Canada150 partnership, committing to provide hands-on learning in the STEM subjects. This two-pronged initiative is delivering educational resources and outreach activities province-wide. The update on this exciting initiative is included below!

ASTTBC has participated in three Community Science Celebration events since the launch of the school year, with ASTTBC confirmed to participate in one more Community Science Celebration event still to take place. So far there has been a total of 3,100 community participants in the first three Community Science Celebration events:

  • Vernon – October 1st, 2016 – 300 community participants
  • Prince George – January 21st, 2017 – 1,300 community participants
  • Fort St. John – March 4th, 2017 – 1,500 community participants
  • Port Alberni – May 13th – participants number to be confirmed

The second activation in the partnership, the ASTTBC Blocks for Building Our Future Competition reports that 13 communities are now actively loaning 15 KEVA Learning Kits through the libraries, school districts and informal education partners. At several locations, the kits are integrated into regularly offered community
programming as well as being available for loan.  Kits can be checked out by anyone (teachers, parents and students). The majority are checked out by teachers and parents and over 1000 youth have checked out and benefitted from utilising the kits.

“I heard the kids in the children’s room using the KEVA blocks take a vote on whether they wanted to stay at the library or move on. That was over an hour ago 🙂 The four of them and their adult have been here for at least 3 hours!” – Library Assistant, Smithers Public Library
“Great opportunity for inter-personal dynamics and lots of fun for the kids.”
-Grandpa, Okanagan Regional Library System
“Team building activities were great. Students talk about them all the time. We also used them for free
time and they loved it. Science is easy to integrate.” – Grade 2 Teacher
